The Human Rights Tribunal assesses matters based on discrimination outlined in the Code. Discrimination on the basis of 17 personal characteristics—referred to as grounds—is prohibited under the Code. These grounds include: citizenship, race, place of origin, ethnic origin, colour, ancestry, disability, age, creed, sex (including pregnancy), family status, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, receipt of public assistance (for housing), and record of offences (for employment).

Provincial offences are violations of laws created by a province (not the federal government). They are usually less serious than crimes under the Criminal Code of Canada and are often regulatory in nature.
Examples include:

A summary conviction is one of the two main categories of criminal offences in Canada (the other being indictable offences). These are less serious offences. Summary convictions are tried only in provincial court.

As of October 01, 2025 the monetary jurisdiction of small claims has increased from $35,000 to $50,000.
Small claims is for civil matters where the dispute is about money or property valued up to $50,00. You may argue matters pertaining to, but not limited to, contract breaches, wrongful dismissal, property damage, and more.

The Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) is an Ontario tribunal that deals with disputes between residential landlords and tenants, operating under the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 (RTA). Matters are heard before an adjudicator. The board hears applications from - landlords (e.g., eviction for non-payment of rent, damage to property, illegal activity) AND applications from tenants (e.g., maintenance/repair issues, illegal rent increases, harassment by landlord).

The Ontario Parole Board (OPB) is a provincial tribunal that makes decisions about the conditional release of offenders serving sentences of less than two years in provincial institutions.
Decides whether an offender can be released on parole (before the end of their sentence) under supervision in the community.
Imposes and monitors conditions of parole (e.g., curfew, treatment programs, reporting to a parole officer).
Reviews cases to ensure parole decisions balance public safety with an offender’s rehabilitation and reintegration.
Parole applications for offenders serving less than two years in a provincial jail.
Reviews of parole violations (deciding whether to continue, change, or revoke parole).
Early release decisions where appropriate and safe.

A block fee is a one-time payment that covers all legal costs, excluding disbursements such as court filing fees. All traffic infractions are handled on a block-fee basis.
We also recognize that hourly rates may not be feasible for everyone. To promote access to justice, we offer block fees for all matters whenever possible.
Clients who are registered with JusticeNet, single parents, newcomers, individuals receiving government assistance, or students may qualify for a reduced block fee rate.
