Human Rights: Protecting Dignity, Preserving Justice
WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS?
As people residing in Canada, we are privileged to live in a country where the human rights of all people are not just respected but legally protected. The Human Rights Code of Ontario protects people residing in Ontario from discrimination on the grounds of:
Race
Age
Disability
Sex
Gender identity
Creed
This protection from discrimination applies to areas such as:
Services
Accommodation
Contracts
Underage accommodation
Employment
Vocational associations
Sexual harassment
Reprisal
What You Should Know
Under the Human Rights Code of Ontario, all people have the right to equal treatment. While citizenship status may matter in certain cases, everyone is covered by the Code under at least some circumstances.
If you believe your rights may have been violated, you may be able to seek a remedy by taking your case before a human rights tribunal. A tribunal operates in a manner similar to that of a court. Remedies may be monetary or non-monetary in nature, depending on the specifics of your situation.
